What makes a good wordmark

  • One distinctive font, used well. Geometric sans (Montserrat, Poppins), a sturdy serif (Playfair Display, DM Serif Display) or a confident script (Pacifico), not all three.
  • Letter spacing: wider spacing with ALL CAPS reads premium; tight spacing reads bold.
  • One accent color for the icon or tagline.
  • Test it small, at favicon or social-avatar size, the initial icon is what people see.

Before you build a brand on it

A text logo is a great start for a side project or new business. Before you invest in signage or packaging, check that the name isn’t already used as a trademark in your market, and consider a designer for a fully custom mark.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trademark a logo made with a free font?

Open-license fonts (like the SIL Open Font License) generally allow use in logos. Trademark protection depends on your name and design as a whole: ask a trademark professional for advice.

Can I get an SVG?

The maker exports a high-resolution transparent PNG (1600 × 800). For an SVG, recreate it in a design app using the same free font.
