How to identify a font

Want to know what font you’re looking at? On a website it takes seconds; from a picture, use a font-matching tool, then find a free look-alike if the original is commercial.

On a website

  1. Right-click the text → Inspect.
  2. In the Styles panel, find font-family, or check the Computed tab and scroll to Rendered Fonts (Chrome) to see the font actually used.

From an image

Upload a clear, straight, high-contrast crop of the text to a font-matching tool (several free ones exist, including tools from major font marketplaces). Crop to a single line and include distinctive letters like g, a, R and Q.

Spot it yourself

Look at: serifs or not; round vs geometric “o”; the shape of “g” (one or two storeys); the tail of “Q”; and the terminals of “a” and “t”.

Frequently asked questions

Can I identify handwriting fonts?

Matching tools struggle with scripts; try a few crops and compare candidates in our cursive fonts previewer.
